Diana is a docudrama focusing on the last 6 weeks of the life of Princess Diana, and is a tightly woven mix of scripted drama, interview and archive footage.
The film was commissioned by TLC (USA), TF1 (France), Prosieben (Germany). Channel 5 (UK) and Channel 1 (Russia). Each broadcaster had different delivery requirements so it was a lesson in versioning, and but eventually there were only editorial changes made for the US market.
I recce’d The Czech Republic and was considering Lithuania for potential locations for the drama shoot but settled on filming in a UK military base, the south of France and central Paris , closing the Alma Tunnel to replicate the final moments.
The challenges of dealing with a subject matter that is so well documented are clear, but the mix of script, interview and archive keeps it fresh. Interviews with Mohammed Al Fayed and Diana’s bodyguard make for interesting viewing and the sensitive portrayal of Diana and Dodi by Genevieve O’Reilly and Patrick Baladi really pull the piece together.
