Mayo (or the Gil Mayo Mysteries in Australia) is an 8 part detective series starring Alistair McGowan commissioned for BBC1 Sunday night.
The series has also been broadcast in Australia on ABC1 and repeated on 7Two, the idiosyncratic characters, quirky storylines and shooting style proving successful in the International market.
This was one of the pioneering BBC dramas to be shot in HD and was edited entirely on Final Cut Pro.
The challenges with this series were mostly budgetary. The price point was that of a precinct drama but the format demanded a high location/studio ratio. The compromise was to build an interior of a mobile incident room, take long term leases on recurring locations (which also doubled as production offices) and limit the guest cast, making sure that during the script process the writers wrote with these parameters in mind.
